THE KING’S CHAOS
The final resting place of King William II. Killed by a stray (or perhaps not so stray) arrow whilst on a hunting trip in the New Forest. The king was said to have wild features including red hair and a ruddy complexion. He was by all accounts a barbarian and very few were sad to see him meet his end here in the Forest. The original Oak has long since gone but mature Oak trees surround the site of the Rufus Stone which was erected in memorandum. The copper red of the dry late Autumn leaves are a call-back to the burnt red of his hair and the twisted, turned and gnarled branches echo the chaos of the King being felled.
